Beautiful Music From Your Librarian
It's that time of year when holiday concerts and choirs fill the air with lovely melodies. Periodicals Coordinator and professional violinist Valencia Mitchell has been performing throughout the area with a variety of orchestras and choirs. If you haven't heard Val play, you're in for a treat. We'll keep you posted as she performs throughout 2009 year as well.

Librarian Hits the Roads
Circulation Coordinator Monica Lopez ran her first 10k road race this weekend! Monica believes in exercising her body as well as her mind and has recently taken up running after realizing kick-boxing was just too dangerous! Not one to do things on a small scale, Monica and her husband Martin decided to train for the Surf City Marathon which will be held in Huntington Beach on February 1, 2009. As you can see in this photo taken just moments after they crossed the finish line, both Monica and Martin finished the "Make Room for Santa 10k" looking strong and happy!

Libraries Are Old But Gold
This video is from 1947 and it brilliantly explains core concepts of different types of libraries, besides highlighting library careers.
Of course a lot has changed from that time, although fundamental services and resources remain the same.
Remember the old card catalogs?
Enjoy this trip back in time. :-)

What Happened to the Library Tree?
Last month we had to say goodbye to our beautiful tree. Do you remember how the tree added a touch of nature to the library? Deeann Fraser, our longtime staff, acquired the tree over 25 YEARS ago. Initially, the tree was small enough, so it was placed on a counter. Unfortunately the tree grew too much, and as a result, we needed to replace it. The "old" tree is now planted outside the library where it finally sees the sun! :-)
Have you seen how the new one looks like? It is tiny. We will probably need to wait another 25 years for it to become as robust as the old one.
